What does it mean?
It’s important for business owners to understand what health & safety in the workplace means. There are many legal issues that can come from not being compliant.
The definition, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is simple enough. Health & safety means the plans and practices used in the workplace to keep people safe from accidents.
Knowing the definition isn’t enough, though, as ignorance of the law isn’t an excuse for when accidents do happen.
What can I do?
Here are a few tips on what you can do to get your Health & Safety plan going-
- Decide on preventative measures
- Get the right tools for people to perform their tasks safely
- Train and instruct staff on these measures
- Supervise to make sure measures are stuck to
Provide reminders
Reminding your staff of how to complete their jobs safely is important. It can also serve as an education point for those who aren’t aware of your practices.
One way to remind your team on the preventative measures is to set up documents for staff to read. Remember to keep these short and concise, with great visuals. If your documents are too technical, your staff may not understand or even read them.
Another way to remind your staff is through posters placed in strategic locations. Remember that about 65% of the population are visual learners- posters really do work as reminders!
Set an example
Always be sure to set an example for staff and colleagues.
If you’re trying to implement new practices, be sure to follow them yourself- it’s the right thing to do. Not only will you inspire others to follow, but you’ll be keeping your colleagues safe.
Motivating your staff by your actions is only one way of ensuring compliance. Another way is to make sure the legalities are met from your business’ side.
